GLUCOSAMINE
Composed of glucose (a sugar) and glutamine (an amino acid), glucosamine is utilized by chondrocytes to form glycosaminoglycans, or Glycosaminoglycans and Derivatives for Treatment of Arthritis
GSG's, and proteoglycans. GSG's help to bind water in cartilage, increasing resiliency. Therefore, glucosamine may actually help your body repair damaged or eroded cartilage. There are three forms of glucosamine; glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride and N-acetyl-glucosamine. It helps attract fluid into proteoglycans, thereby bringing nutrients into the cartilage and providing shock absorption. While glucosamine helps manufacture and maintain cartilage, chondroitin keeps cartilage from becoming malnourished, drier, thinner and more fragile? Therefore, chondroitin may aid in healthy joint function. It is believed that, as we age, glucosamine and chondroitin levels in the body are reduced, which is why supplementation may hold the answer to joint and cartilage maintenance.
