    What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night... it is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.

    Depression, insomnia, anxiety, suicide, migraines, PMS, obsessive/compulsive behavior, stress, obesity, and addiction are all manifestations of low level serotonin. Many of the new prescription drugs that have become available since the absence of L-Tryptophan are designed to regulate brain serotonin levels.

    5HTP is a safe alternative to Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and Effexor, which work by the selective enhancement of serotonin levels, and Dexfenfluramine (Redux), which suppresses the appetite by mimicing serotonin activity in the brain.

    5HTP is many times more active than L-Tryptophan and is the immediate precursor to serotonin (5-Hydroxytryptophan, or 5-HTP).

    Neurotransmitters are the chemical language of the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter in the brain that helps you feel calm and relaxed. Serotonin acts throughout the body. In the central nervous system, Serotonin has widespread implications, including a role in sleep, appetite, memory, learning, temperature regulation, mood, sexual behavior, cardiovascular function, muscle contraction, and endocrine regulation. Low levels of serotonin have been associated with impulsive behavior, aggression, over-eating, depression, and suicide. Serotonin plays a major role in controlling blood pressure by constricting large arteries in the blood vessels.

    As the immediate precursors to Serotonin, the amino acids Tryptophan and 5-HTP can play an important part in producing more Serotonin in the body.

    Through its ability to raise Serotonin levels in the body, 5-HTP may be useful for:

    Reducing Depression
    Relieving Anxiety
    Reduction of the rate of Heart Disease as a result of
    Lowering Anxiety and Depression.
    Improving Mood
    Suppressing Appetite
    Enhancing Sleep
    Relieving symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder
    Preventing Migraine Headaches
    Recommended Usage: Take 1 capsule one to two times daily, or as directed by health care professional.

    NOTE: It is important to take 5-HTP away from any protein food. One product manufacturer suggests taking it 45 minutes before or three hours after a protein meal.

    Contraindications to 5-HTP use or conditions under which 5-HTP use should only be under the supervision of a physician are:
    Cardiovascular Diseases (high blood pressure, post-stroke, post-heart attack); Extremely Elderly Persons; those with Parkinsons; Disease, Cancer or Autoimmune Diseases (Scleroderma, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus); Lung Diseases; Chronic Alcoholism; Liver diseases (hepatitis or cirrhosis); parasitic infection; AIDS; Anorexia Nervosa; Low protein Diets; Allergies (severe); Myalgia (persistent pain and weakness of the muscles); Peripheral Neuropathy (pain weakness of the muscles); Rash or Flushing; Edema; Nausea; Diarrhea; Sickle cell anemia; hemophilia or Pregnancy.

    Concurrent drug use: 5-HTP should not be used if taking:
    Anti-depressant drugs; Monoamine oxidase inhibitors;
    Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's e.g., Prozac);
    Tricyclic medications;
    Weight Loss medications (i.e., dextenfluramine);
    Anti-parkinson medications (e.g., L-dopa);
    Barbiturates and other tranquilizing drugs;
    Antihistamines and cold medications;
    Alcoholic beverages;
    Intravenous (illegal I.V.) drugs;
    Cancer chemotherapy or antibiotic medications.

    Warning: Dosages of 5-hydroxy L-tryptophan (5-HTP) greater than 100 milligrams per day should be taken only under the guidance of a physician. 5-HTP use at doses greater than 100 mg per day should be taken with the prescription drug carbadopa to prevent excessive levels of serotonin production in the peripheral blood circulation. 5-HTP can increase the effect of tranquilizing drugs and can impair the ability to drive an automobile.
