Sage is used to purify the mind, body and spirit before praying. It is also used to purify sacred items such as
pipes, and eagle feathers. Some may use it to purify their homes, offices, cars and some carry a small amount of Sage in a pocket or medicine pouch to insure personal and spiritual safety.
"Smudging" is a term used when purifying with sage or sweetgrass. Wad a small amount of sage in your left hand (closest to your heart) and place in a bowl, most use a shell for this, a shell is also sacred and should be used, but if you don't have a shell, then a bowl that is heat tempered is permissible until a shell is found (Believe me, if you are sincere about following the Red Road, a shell will come your way. Always keep aware of your surroundings and what is offered to you).
Light the sage with a match or lighter. The Sage will flame up, then die out and will smoke. As it smokes hold the shell/bowl in one hand and wave the smoke over your head and your body or placing the shell/bowl on the table will work, too.
After you have 'smudged down' it is time to 'smudge' your offering. Offerings can be tobacco, a spirit dish or what you consider sacred to you. Hold your offering above the bowl and let the smoke flow over it. After you have smudged your offering you are ready for prayers.
